Praying for people

Chelsea

I am an atheist. It bothers me when people tell me they'll pray for me. Recently I have discovered, however, that a much more respectful way to approach the situation is by ASKING "can I pray for you" "would you like me to pray for you". This approach is more likely to induce respect for both parties (the person offering prayer, as well as the person being offered) because you aren't assuming that your prayers are appreciated. My extended families are very religious, Baptist, Jewish, Methodist, Episcopalian.....and they routinely tell me that they're praying for me. I don't think I'm rude for not wanting their prayers. They are aware of my atheism, and basically don't acknowledge my beliefs.

What do you think?

Are you religious and always tell people you will pray for them regardless of their views?

Are you atheist or agnostic and prefer people not to give you unsolicited prayer?

Are you religious but respect each person's autonomy to accept or decline your offer for prayer?

Do you have a different opinion?
