anyone deliver at age 40 or older?

i’ll be 40 at time of delivery and was told they won’t let me go past 40 weeks due to age and would need induction if i don’t go into labor by then. i’m nervous bc my last baby was 6 days late and i really prefer to not be induced.

Every bad delivery I’ve had (3 out of 5) was after an induction. I’ll be 43 when this one comes and I know they’LL try and pressure me.  I’d rather come in more often and check baby because I almost died the last 3 times, each time they said “it is unlikely to happen again” but it wasn’t until later I put together the bad delivery with inductions.  And maybe one has nothing to do with the other but who knows.

It’s always your choice. Going ‘past dates’ does not indicate a medical necessity for induction. You can refuse anything. Anything your doctor tells you is merely a recommendation.

Please listen to your doctor and ask questions if you have concerns with their plan. The risks to you and baby are much higher at 40 than if you were under 35. Even when we feel like we’re healthy, our bodies are still different. ACOG recommends delivering all women 40 and older at 39 weeks (so before 40 weeks) because of the risk of increasing risk of stillbirth beyond 40 weeks.

Advocate for yourself and if necessary, find a provider who will listen to you. They work for you, not the other way around. OBs hate to be bothered, so it’s much easier to do an induction or c-section, but stand firm on what you want. Unless it’s medically necessary, I always say, “no thank you,” and let my body take charge. Best of luck to you! 🙂

If you don't feel comfortable with your dr or feel like they aren't listening to you then go see a different dr. I'm doing that because the previous one was very cold and brushed off all of my concerns. I'll be 41 when I deliver and I've had pre-eclampsia before and almost died because the dr I had at the time didn't want to listen to me. It's very important to advocate for yourself or have someone come with you as backup.

I was 40 when I had my son. My doctor let me go to 41 weeks before I asked to be induced. I would question the not let you go past 40 weeks.

“Let you” go past 40 weeks?! Sounds like you need a new doctor that’s effing crazy. If there’s nothing wrong with your baby and there is no other indication to need an intervention you tell them NO absolutely not! That is your body your choice! So if you were 39 and 11 months it would be no issue that’s bananas. Maybe I’m crunchy and stubborn but I would raise Cane on that doctor for telling you that. That’s just as bad as telling a 16 year old she has to have an abortion because she’s too young. Inducing increases chance of complications and PPD you do what you want but in my opinion that’s crazy. They are more worried about their insurance or record than actually helping you have a healthy delivery.

I was 38. I requested them to do additional testing instead. So I went in 2x a week and they did non stress tests. As long as you and the baby are fine, it may be okay to wait a bit longer.
