Did my boyfriend on settle down because I was going to leave?

My now boyfriend and I were in the “talking stage” for a little over 6 months and it was toxic. We argued a lot, he has jealousy issues, anger issues. Our worst fight was literally a days before we got together. He screamed and threw stuff around. Between that and feeling like our relationship wasn’t going anywhere, I decided it was enough and stopped talking to him. He definitely noticed and kept trying to get me to talk to him. At first, I was over it and 100% set on ending it. I ignored him for a couple days to decide how to end it. But then all of a sudden he started flirting with me and it came up about us trying to be together. He mentioned us fighting often and how he thinks we wouldn’t work. I said it’s fine and just left it because I was over it, like I said. But then he surprised me and said he still wanted to try, we just have to try to communicate more effectively because he thinks it’s where our issues stemmed. So I’m letting him have a chance. Things are better. We haven’t fought since the fight where he threw stuff, he goes out of his way to make more time for me, he kisses me and calls me beautiful all the time, is super affectionate. So it seems genuine. But a big part of me feels like he’s only doing it because he didn’t want me to leave and it makes me feel weird
