Why does manual pumping hurt

hello 
i want to start collecting colostrum and im pregnant with my first 
im using the medela hand pump it comes with the 24mm flange size 
i tried pumping but literally the first pump it hurt rly badly and turned my nipple a little red and was sore to the touch for a few hours 
help what can i do or what should i do and how should i pump to collect colostrum…???

You don’t have the correct flange size. You must be sized correctly. 
There’s no reason to be collecting now. How far along are you?

Look up hand expressing colostrum. Our bodies only make a very small amount of it, so you could potentially lose a lot of it in a pump’s parts/mechanism. Also don’t start trying to express it until you’re at least 37 weeks. Make sure you research correct/safe storage of it as well.

You may not be able to collect anything before baby arrives. When I was pregnant with my first, my midwife recommended I start pumping a few times a day starting at 39 weeks, since nipple stimulation can encourage labor to start. I never got a single drop, even that far along in pregnancy. My milk came in 3 days after birth, and I never had a supply issue. If it hurts badly, you may need to try a different flange size.
