Is it rude to not open presents at baby shower?

Question

My partner and I are doing a co-ed baby shower at my mom’s house. Big house, big back yard we’ll be doing it outdoors with a tent, tables, outdoor games food out etc. A BBQ hangout type baby shower. I created a FB page to invite everyone, and as the numbers of attendees are increasing, I don’t think opening presents there will be a good idea. I can see 40/50 people there easily, and I feel like opening gifts from both sides of our families will take FOREVER. lol. I want to add we won’t be opening gifts there, so no need to wrap unless you’d like, and we can open anyone’s privately if they wish. Is this rude though?! I know lots of people like to watch that but my first shower with my son was smaller and even that took an hour. My now partner and I are expecting a little girl, and much more people attending I can’t image how long it would take. However does this mean we should also send out thank you cards? How would we obtain everyone’s address? lol!

I would rather go to a shower where they don’t sit and open gifts honestly 😂 lol it’s so boring to watch someone open 100 baby items one after another

I loathe gift opening at parties, especially at children’s parties. I feel like it should be done in private.

You can do a “display shower” with no opening, but your guests should be aware that’s what will happen. Google some cutesy ways to say spare the wrapping paper. Definitely get everyone’s mailing address to mail thank-yous though.

For my first, my hosts asked guests to bring unwrapped gifts and set them up on a table. That way if people wanted to look at what we received, they could, but no one had to sit through an hour of gift opening.

I wouldn't care but when I had my baby shower (we only did it for baby 1 because I HATE baby showers) my inlaws and a lot of people there would have pitched a fit and forced it anyways so I opened gifts there. To make it go faster my husband opened them too and we let our our 3 yr old nephew help. Nobody openes gifts as fast as a toddler and people thought it was cute. If you can get away with not opening..girls don't do it though lol. I didn't want the drama so just found a way to power through real fast. We opened and my sister wrote down who gave what for thank you cards later. Got everything opened in like 20 minutes.

As far as gathering addresses, you can have a basket at the gift table and say “please self address an envelope so we can thank you later!”
That’s what I’ve done for wedding & baby showers, it’s a lot easier.

I don’t think it’s rude. I’d put that in your invite to people will know! It does take FOREVER to open gifts. I hated opening mine at my baby shower.
