Early riser & low sleep baby

Mo🧚‍♀️

Our 6 month old has routinely been an early riser for months now - maybe since 3 months? His standard is around 4:30 am (usually wakes up to eat and then 💩).

We have tried earlier bed time, later bed time, and even on days when he gets the crappiest naps - he’s up and ready to party before 5 am.

I’d estimate that he only gets 12 hours of total sleep per day and at best 9 hours of sleep at night. Is anyone else dealing with this? Did you deal with this with your LO in the past? And do you think we should worry about how LITTLE sleep he’s really getting?

He’s not a fussy baby - very happy - but he does crash out by his bedtime (which we’ve started aiming for at 7pm, so we have time alone and know he’s going to be up early anyway).

Appreciate the input!

How are you wake windows in between naps during the day? Make sure he’s getting the recommended daily hours of naps for a 6 month old (3-4 hours divided into 3 naps) & wake windows of only 2-3 hours between naps and before bed time. Too long of a stretch of wake window before bed will make them over tired. Over tired = worse quality of sleep & early morning waking’s. Also my son used to go to bed at 7pm every night but would wake 530-6 in the morning. We treated it like a night waking still and attempted to put him back to bed then wake him at his normal time. If he wouldn’t go back to bed we adjusted his nap schedule/bedtime for the day to make sure his wake windows stayed okay. Eventually it evened out and he started sleeping 12 solid hours through the night and still does.

Sounds like you’re doing everything you can! 🤍 might just need to play around until you find what works. Or maybe it’ll also just even out eventually as he ages. 🤞🏼 Also if you’re not already completely blacking out the room where he sleeps that may help a lot. It did for our son. Good luck when traveling! 🍀

Thanks for sharing your experience! His wake windows are just that - 2 to 3 hours - except for his first wake at 4:30 am, which is usually only 90 minutes. But his naps do typically total 3 hours. For that reason, I’m also kind of treating it as a night waking (and just as ready as him to go back to bed). It’s also typically his best nap at 1.5 hours. Otherwise, he only naps for 45 minutes or one sleep cycle. Today, I tried pushing him to 2 hrs for the first WW and wondering if I just keep pushing and get to 7:30 - that that may help. We are traveling for the next 3 weeks in a different time zone, where 4:30 am will be 2:30 am. Wish me luck 🍀 and thanks again!
