Changing name after marriage?

For those of you who took your husband's last name after marriage, did you just go straight to the Social Security office or did you have to go through the whole process to file a petition in court and wait 3 weeks?

I didn't have to go to the courts at all.. Just the ss office with marriage license. Then when new ss card came, I took it to dmv too change my name. Then had to call and change my name on my accounts, car, insurance, bank, etc

Well I waited 6 years to get mine changed lol. But went to the ss office and got a new one in a few weeks

Have you already gotten married? If not, when you go get your marriage license, ask the county clerk. Ours had a checklist for things to remember to change your name on and how to start the process.  I believe that generally speaking you should be able to change it with just the marriage certificate. I would start with your social then change your drivers license. After that, most documents/accounts should be easy.

I went to the drivers license office first and changed it there and all I had was my marriage license and old drivers license. Then I went to the social security office and had my birth certificate, marriage license and social security card and got it all in the mail pretty quick after that.

I just went to the social security office and I took my marriage licenses. FYI take that marriage licenses with you everywhere when going to change your name for something, and some places will ask for your ID with your old and new name.

It's different for every state. You need to look that up for your state. In Nevada we have to go to the social security office first then take that and our marriage certificate to the DMV to get a new license. However in California you can just take your marriage certificate to the DMV as proof

If you hyphenate or use both old and new as your new last name, you can go to the DMV but not change your other documents
