Is it worth it?

I'm almost 29 years old, I've been on birth control for about 10 years now... I am over it, taking it at the same time every day, and can't help but think it's really starting to affect how I feel and my mental health... I want to get the copper IUD but I want to know if it's worth it and what the pain threshold is... I've heard a lot of people say it hurts like hell and that terrifies me... Do you lose your period? Does it get worse? I get hormonal acne and my periods without the pill last 8-10 days... Worth the pain?

I had the copper IUD for 7 years. The insertion pain is absolutely manageable, I’d put it at a 3 out of 10. It’s nonhormonal, so it shouldn’t impact your cycle - you may bleed a bit after insertion and cramps are frequently worse with the copper IUD. But the length of your cycle shouldn’t be impacted. It also won’t impact your acne concerns, because it’s nonhormonal. It’s very much worth it, in my opinion, if your primary concern is avoiding pregnancy. If you’re wanting something that could stop your cycles, make them lighter, or possibly help with hormonal acne, a hormonal IUD may be more beneficial. I had the Mirena for 2 years after I had my son, and my periods became virtually nonexistent.

Had mine in for over fifteen years and it was 100% effective. No issues. No pain. They don’t hurt any worse than a routine uterine biopsy. Little pinch. Some ancillary bleeding but no big deal. I’d highly recommend the copper one.

The copper iud for me was effective for me but the insertion pain was severe! :(
