Is it rude to ask someone if they’re straight?

A family member’s gf asked me randomly if I was dating. She does not know me that well personally. I said I hadn’t been dating anyone currently and have just been focusing on work and I’m happy where I’m at. She immediately asked if I am into dudes… I am a straight female and just feel it is rude to question someone’s sexuality just because they aren’t actively dating. What do you think?

Unless she has someone in mind to set you up with so shes asking for a reason, it's distasteful.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this post, I guess? I don't think I would ever ask someone I wasn't really close with, but these days I feel it's equally rude to just assume someone is straight just thesame.

I didn't date til i reached 23.. and that's because i didn't know my type.. i was always asked or made fun of that i was a lesbian.. even to the point where people would mock me for how i looked at a female.. at work and the gym.. i didn't.. and i'm very much into men.

Yes. I actually did this to somebody once and i very much regret it. I was young and stupid. And i would never do it again.
