Do you take home new cups/mugs from the store and just use it without washing it, or do you wash it before first use?

My husband's family hosted a Labour Day BBQ and his mom decided she needed new plastic patio dishware. We went to Target and picked up some cute stuff. She got home and didn't wash a single thing, just took them out of the bag and started pouring drinks. I asked her aren't you going to wash them first and she said "No. They're brand new."

I always wash everything before I use it. Who knows who's touched it or where it's been. Is that not a normal thing to do?

You have no clue who touched those and how much dust or whatever god knows what they collected sitting on a shelf. Your sister is either unhygienic or a bit ditzy.

It’s definitely abnormal to NOT wash them, not the other way around. Most people wash new dishes before using them

New cups/mugs have to be washed; not only have they been touched multiple times and carry dust, but there’s also a coating on them that needs to come off. Similar to how apples need to be washed beforehand because there’s a gloss coating on them to make them shiny and more desirable to buy.

I wash new kitchen items and also any new clothes or sheets. My husband even got me in the habbit of wiping off can mouth pieces before drinking from them haha.
