What are your feelings on weight loss surgery?

Just wondering how people feel about resulting to weight loss surgery when a controlled diet and exercise achieves the same result without the need for anaesthetic and major surgery. 
Is obesity because of addictions? Or is it laziness?

I honestly hate it when people who aren't obese and never have been obese try to talk about it like they know how it is. There is a huge difference between losing 15-20lbs to fit in some dress for a high school reunion and losing 100-200lbs so you can live! WLS (weight loss surgery) is NOT an easy way out of losing weight. There is no easy way to lose weight. You use it as a tool to help you get to your goal. There's no magic pill. WLS is also a last resort most people who have to get it have a hard time working out, sleeping, walking, tying their shoes, traveling the list goes on and on. It's probably the hardest decision you'll ever make. There are so many complications that come with getting WLS not1 to mention there's a good chance you might not make it off the table. When I say it's a last resort it's a last resort you don't get the surgery to become a super model. You'll most likely have lots of excess skin hanging off your body you do it because you want to live not because you wanna be able to find your clothes size in a regular store. Sorry this rant is long but I'm so tired of hearing "you're being lazy" "it's the easy way out" people who say that honestly don't know shit about shit.

Most surgeons will require a patient to diet & exercise before they'll even consider the surgery.

Most surgeons require you to lose X amount of weight before they'll perform weight loss surgery. Why a person is obese could be the result of one or several factors, and it's up to the individual and their doctor on how weight loss should be approached. If they desire it.

I have a cousin who had the gastric bypass surgery about 10 years ago and has since gained all her weight back and is now considered obese again. My older sister had the same surgery last year and she looks great but I honestly think that it is the lazy way out especially when it comes to my sister. She has always been lazy and never wanted to diet and/or exercise and claimed that she has done everything she possibly could to lose weight. She still continues to eat unhealthy fatty and fried foods, which will eventually catch up to her in the long run. I'm able to lose a lot of weight once I watch what I eat and exercise, which I think is the healthier option. My sister also has had many complications from the surgery and is on multiple medications for it. Just because you lose weight and get skinny from these types of surgery doesn't mean you are healthy.

I lost 80lbs the old fashioned way; diet and exercise. I didn't want to be seen as the person that was too lazy and went straight for surgery for the fix. I lost the 80 and hope to lose another 20 and then I get to have a tummy tuck and boob job because I worked my ass off for it.

My mom had gastric bypass. She was almost 400 pounds due to bad eating habits and medical issues it snowballed until surgery was the only option. There was no exercising for her she couldn't walk to the car by herself. If she hasn't gotten the surgery then she wouldn't be here today but it wasn't an easy fix after almost 9 years she still struggles with complications from it. She's had 15+ surgeries since then to re open the opening to her stomach because it swells to where she can't hold water down. She has to make a choice daily to not eat the foods that will make her gain weight she had to go through surgeries to remove excess skin on her stomach and if she gains any weight it causes her excruciating pain due to scar tissue. It is not the lazy way trust me I'm glad she did it because of not I wouldn't have her here but it hasn't been easy by far. It was a last resort effort to save her life

I'm pretty sure you don't qualify for surgery until you show them that you can lose weight.

Here, of the specialists that I've spoken to, say that you have to lose a certain amount of weight in a year. If you show them you can do it, they'll consider you.

At that point, you're probably under the weight that you were supposed to be at, and you are then encouraged to lose it yourself. It's great.

Let's be real and exclude the obvious "excuses" like trying to juggle marriage, child, bills, working nights, blah blah blah.

I'm too tired to exercise, I don't like to exercise, I was never really taught the best ways to diet and exercise. Saying "Diet and exercise" in classes and discussions isn't detailed enough to allure my interest, nor is saying "it takes time" or "everyone is different" when asking about time consumption vs ANY kind of results. It discourages me, so I know it has to discourage others.

If someone handed me a lipo gift card I'd hit them up on it. Is it wrong? No, I don't think so. In the dieting world everything is full of ifs and beauty standards are ever present, so anyone wanting to see results fast isn't wrong for wanting something immediately satisfying. In the specific example of liposuction you still have to change your ways to keep a desired shape after words, especially because new fat will go to odd places. But you still would get the satisfaction of "ok, this how I want to look. All I have to do is maintain it". This to me is like cutting the job in half.

So my feelings there is 0 shame in any weight loss surgery.
