Courthouse wedding?

My fiance and I want to get married this year and just do a courthouse wedding and have a bigger
"wedding" when we can afford it. He is worried about people having hurt feelings like parents, grandparents etc. while I respect his feelings on it, it's ultimately our decision and what makes us happy. If you had a kid that decided to do a courthouse wedding and you weren't there, would you be upset about it? Help!

My wedding was on a front porch with just our parents, siblings, and immediate family. My reception was a hot dog / hamburger grill out at my in-laws house. It was a beautiful perfect day. If you’re wanting it to just be you and him, that’s your decision & you all should do what makes you BOTH happy because it’s just as much his day as yours. But if you are looking for an inexpensive way to include the family, there are beautiful simple ways to get married for free in which parents can still attend.

I attended a friend’s courthouse wedding. They were allowed to have about 10 people there, and we did a nice dinner with about 20 people who met us right after. As a parent, I know how expensive things are. If only 2 people can go as witnesses I’d be disappointed but completely understand and I would absolutely offer to throw a party after. If they want a big shin dig, they can get their check books out, that’s an option.

So in Florida we don’t have to have witnesses and dogs count as witnesses. We wanted to include them somehow since they would be able to be at the actual thing.

My husband and I had my friend marry us then just had a little bbq in the backyard with friends we cared about. There was no family because both our families are big on drama and we wanted none of that. Both our mothers were pissed but we had the BEST time. There wasn’t an ounce of drama and there was no stress about it. It’s not their day it’s yours so you do what you guys want to do not what your parents want you to do.

My and my husband got married when Covid happened. We did it in front of our dogs, at home. Wouldn’t change a thing. Signed a paper and sent it back. Now, my mom didn’t like it that we had a wedding but honestly I don’t care what anyone thinks. I’m pretty sure other family members were also hurt but it’s about me and my husband. If that’s what you want to do then go for it.

If hes worried about that, maybe thats not really what he wants? Maybe do a smaller wedding with just immediate family? I honestly would be hurt if one of my kids got married without me being there. I dont care where it is, if it's fancy or casual, big or small etc whatever makes them happy, but I would want to be there. Maybe thats selfish but thats how I feel.

They might not be around for the bigger wedding after.. i wouldn't do a big wedding.. in fact i had a very small one too and i regret it.. i hurt alot of people.

I wish I would have had a court house wedding. It was expensive and unnecessary, felt like a fake show off of people who didn’t actually care about me or us. Plus multiple fights broke out at the reception 🙄. It was 100 -150 people maybe and I hated the whole thing.

I had a friend who had to wait due to COVID in 2020 to have the wedding she wanted. Come 2021 there were still restrictions but they no longer wanted to wait to get married. There is a difference between wanting to be married, and wanting a wedding. 
They did courthouse and then her parents surprised her with a “party” at her parent’s house after with about 20-30 close friends and family. It want what she planned, or expected, but thoroughly enjoyed as the couple got to be married and still celebrated with some of the closest people around them. It was very intimate and special to them. 
For myself, my husband is in Jamaica and I was pregnant when we got married. I was more than fine with courthouse wedding with few close family members. My parents ended up paying for a wedding in which I had about 30-40 family members. I have to admit, it was lovely and special. I think as women, we all “imagine” a wedding, and not just marriage. It was beautiful to get that experience, and to enjoy with those that love us. I am thankful my parent’s pushed for me to have a small intimate wedding.
