Would you be upset by this?

My bf and I are in our late 20s. We live together and have been together for 4 years.  We spend every holiday together. 
His family always plans a short vacation a week or 2 before Christmas and I have gone on a couple with them. 
But this year, he just told me his mom planned it for the week of new years. And I won’t be able to go because I can’t get out of work that whole week. But then if my boyfriend goes, we won’t get to spend New Year’s eve together which is always a special night for us. And I honestly will just end up being home alone. 
Would you be upset ??

A little upset but I’d also encourage him to go.
Relationships are going to have situations like this come up. You compromise. It sounds like they try their best to accommodate others and it wasn’t done to spite you. Things just didn’t line up in your favor this year. 
The options are: you drop things and go, he goes and you enjoy an evening to yourself, or he stays home with you. 
What is most feasible? How important is this to him? What’s more important for your relationship?

I’d be a little sad and upset but I’d want him to go. He shouldn’t miss the trip because I have to work. I’d plan something special before or after he gets back.

Depends. Does he pay for this trip? Did he sign off on the date knowing that day was a special day for you? Or do his parents plan and pay for everything and he just moves his schedule around and attends? If it’s the latter and that’s his family’s holiday together, I’d be understanding, maybe other weeks didn’t work out or they got a deal. If he knew this was important to you and still signed off on the date without you, I might be annoyed, but ultimately it sounds like their annual tradition is important to him, more than whatever you two do on new years, and that’s okay.

It would depend, but not really. They don’t have to cater to you. But maybe talk it over and see if there can be some type of agreement

Absolutely! Why wasn't this communicated early enough for you to swap your annual leave around. Why weren't you included in the decision making? When a relationship lasts this long, usually the partners become part of each others families. 
I personally find that very tactless that you haven't been included and now may have to spend a special day completely alone.
