You can only get pregnant in the 24 hours after you ovulate when there is a live egg in your fallopian tube. Your partner’s sperm can stay alive inside your fallopian tube between 3 and 5 days waiting for your egg. So the 5 days before your ovulation, your ovulation day, and the day after is considered your fertile week. 
After ovulation day, if your egg is not fertilized, your uterus begins to prepare for menstruation. It takes about 14 days average (12 to 16) days from ovulation to menstruation.. During these 14 days, after ovulation, you are not fertile and cannot get pregnant because the egg already died. The same goes for the first few days of your period - you are not fertile then.
It is however not a good idea to have sex without protection during these days because sometimes our cycles are disturbed and you ovulate at another time. When you have very short cycles, < 22 days long) these calculations are also not correct.
So in summary: you are fairly safe the week before your period and the first few days of your period. You are however not 100% safe.
