Using Birth Control Pill To Skip Period HELP!

I attempted to skip my period by skipping the placebo pills and continuing a new pack, however it was my first time doing this and I’m not sure if I am experiencing breakthrough bleeding or my period and it’s just lighter. I’ve been bleeding for a week now, at first it was super light and barely required a panty liner, today it is heavy like a normal period starting. I’ve read that if this happens to take a few days of not taking the pill but I don’t know if that’s best. Can someone give me some advice or explanation?
