Is it ok to give up on breastfeeding?

I haven’t been the best at breastfeeding. My son is 4 months and I loved breastfeeding, but he sucks too much air and end up spitting up a lot because of it. So I turned to pumping, but I suck at it and my supply is all but dried up now. I feel guilty for not being better at keeping up on it to have my son breast milk instead of formula.

But of course it’s fine to stop. Fed is best. Let go of the guilt.

Yes, it’s absolutely ok, some women, me included don’t even start out breastfeeding and my child that was breastfed and my formula fed child are both healthy little squirts and the both turned out just fine. Breastfeeding my first was the worst experience I’ve ever had in my life, I was so stressed all the time between trying to nurse him and pump that I didn’t even really get to bond with him, but I tried my best not to give up and it really took a toll on my emotional health. When I got pregnant with my second child I made my mind up as soon as I got a positive test I was bottle feeding from the start, and it changed my whole life. I wouldn’t ever go back, 24 weeks with twins and I will not even attempt to nurse them. It is a person choice, and babies are formula fed every day and things are just fine for them.

It’s not ideal, but the good news is that options exist to help you out. He will do alright on infant formula. Some moms take to nursing and some don’t. Some babies do and some don’t. It’s not always as easy as magazine articles and influencers make it sound.

It is totally fine to give formula. I breastfed my first for three months before having to go back to work. My second never breastfed. My third was in the hospital for the first couple weeks and was on fortified formula while there. I breast fed a little, but fortified it with formula. Then I had two emergency surgeries, so went back to only formula. By the time I could breastfeed again, i was mosrly dried up. Since I was fortifying it anyway, i just stopped. It was too much for me.      If you want to keep trying, you could see a lactation specialist. They might be able to help you. Just try not to get yourself down about it. As long as your baby is fed. Youre doing a good job. :-)

Il share my breastfeeding journey. So i started breastfeeding, within few days after been born baby lost weight (upto 10 percent which is normal), but me been a stresshead i thought he was going to die. So i was giving him formula and also breastfeeding. Once he put on the weight after couple weeks i took the formula away, and just breastfed him upto the age of 11 months.  I wont ever look down at a mother for giving their baby formula. If the baby is gaining weight and having their milk supply either by formula or breastmilk thats the main thing. But i do agree with others, you can get help from a lactation professional. Some tips to help though in meantime; try different positions, i could not breastfeed from left boob, baby preferred right, so always had haakaa on left to drain it, try sitting or laying, even standing to see if baby latches on better. I used a pump a couple times but wasnt for me; i just used the haakaa. Even if your milk supply has dropped now that doesnt mean its over. It will soon come back.

As a mother who exclusively formula fed her first baby due to a lack of education, I highly advise you to try to talk to a lactation consultant deciding to switch to formula. You don’t want to regret it.

That’s only a decision you can make. You’re the one who has to live and be at peace with it. For me personally, I couldn’t, and wouldn’t. But my life and situation isn’t your life and situation. Will your child live? Sure. Obviously that’s the most important aspect. But you have to make the call based on whatever is on your priority list. It’s one of many parenting decisions you’ll make throughout your life that only you have to deal with the outcome on.
