How do you handle watching your spouse's family treat them badly

Me and my husband are both 24. He just graduated with his bachelor's and his mom didn't bother coming to the graduation and told him that she is still having trouble believing he didn't cheat his way through grad school because she never found him that smart. My husband's family has always treated him badly. He's the middle child. He struggled in school which resulted in him acting out so his dad would beat him with a belt for poor grades. His parents and siblings all insult him. When I met his mom she actually said I was too pretty for him and would she thinks I would like her older son better. His brothers also aren't nice to him and make fun of him for going to therapy and saying he's a pussy for going to therapy. We spent Christmas with them and it was just his family shitting in him saying if we have a baby she hopes the baby doesn't look like him. My husband is good at controlling his emotions but he cried on Christmas. How would you handle thid
