Asking for advice for a friend.

My best friend has suffered with severe migraines all her life. She has finally found a medication that helps, BUT she is finally pregnant after many years of no positive pregnancy tests before. Does anyone have any experience taking Sumatriptan while pregnant?

Looks like some studies suggest it’s linked to preeclampsia, preterm labor and low birth weight also heavy bleeding after birth. Others say not enough studies have been done because they don’t typically test any medication intentionally on pregnant women. It’s recommend to speak with your doctor to weigh out the risk/benefit for each individual. Personally, I wouldn’t choose to take it with those risks being noted.

My doctor told me it was safe to take during pregnancy as needed when I got a migraine. My first pregnancy, I stopped getting migraines and didn’t start getting them again until almost 6 months postpartum. This pregnancy, (8 weeks 2 days) I have had a few but they have not been as severe and I have only taken 1/2 of my sumatriptan.

Good news is that it is a possibility that the migraines will ease up or even go away during pregnancy without any medication, I’ve had migraines my whole life and have only had one really bad headache/mild migraine and a few regular minor headaches and I’ll be 20 weeks on Friday
