Crib mattress protector... Is it safe? What brand?

I want to use a waterproof mattress protector but I'm afraid it might not be safe sleep approved. Everything I read says to just use a fitted sheet on mattress but I can't find anything about a mattress protector. What do you guys think? Are you using one? If so, What brand?

Our crib matress is like a plastic type material, so i never felt like i needed a matress protector. If my daughter ever soaks through i just wipe it down.

I got a sealy's mattress protector from babies r us online. It pretty much is a piece of fabric that you lay on top of the mattress. It doesn't cover the whole thing. And then you put the crib sheet over it.  As long as the sheet doesn't come off, I don't see it being a safety issue. But I'm not sure how well it will protect the mattress. I guess I have to wait and see.
