Question

Can my employer use my pto without my consent?  Story:  back in September I was off due to complications in pregnancy but I would always call in and update her,  but she still used my pto to pay me for those days? I hope the question makes sense 🤔

Actually it depends. At my company if I have PTO available I have to use it if I'm out sick or had a situation like yours were I can't work from home. Like last week I was home sick but I decided to work from home so they couldn't use my pto because I answered emails etc. But a while back I took a 3 day trip with my family and wanted to do it unpaid as to save my pto for maternity leave. Well since I had pto they forced me take a certain amount of pto hours to keep me at the required amount of hours worked per pay period. Maybe that's what she had to do? I say this assuming you are a salaried employee. Hourly works totally differently.

I think it's pretty standard for company policy to be: if you have PTO you have to use it before you can take unpaid days off.

Uhhh. No they can't just file PTO without your consent who do you work for and why didn't you clarify your pay situation for those days after it happened. Their bad but also your bad .

I'm salaried and at my work you have to use all PTO before you can take unpaid time! Just save the money so you can use it during your maternity leave! ☺️

In most states it is required that you use any and all available PTO before you can take unpaid leave. Look up FMLA as well as in your employee handbook, it should be discussed under a section that talks about Leaves of Absence. 
I had to rewrite my companies employee handbook. While I know most states are different, they still should be complying with the federal standards.

Most companies require you to use your PTO first before opting for unpaid leave. I've never heard of it being any other way.

Depends on the job. My husband is local government and he can't opt for unpaid leave until all available leave is exhausted.
