I'm 7 weeks post D&C at 20 weeks- is it too early?

My husband and I aren't technically actively trying but have reconnected for the 1st time since the loss of our baby girl at 20 weeks almost 7 weeks ago. I had my 1st full period already & am worried that we didn't use protection and if it's risky if we happen to conceive too early. Any experiences : are we safe: would it be safer after a 2nd period? I can't imagine going through another loss plus I'm 39 years old.
