Can you potty train a one year old?

My daughter is 13 months old she just learned how to walk and now my mother in law in pressuring me into starting to potty train her I still say she's to little

My brother woke up one day when he was around 3 and just announced that diapers are for babies and that he was going on the potty from then on. He was in big boy underwear full time after only a week. When they're ready you'll know lol.

Elimination communication isn't potty training. It's recognizing when your child has to go and putting them on the potty. The child isn't controlling anything or making the decision to go.

Potty training requires the child to control their own bladder. It's a physical milestone that we can't rush. Generally this happens between 18 -36 months depending on the child. This is just the average so obviously this can happen sooner, I would think that's pretty rare to be prior to a year though. My boys were both ready at 2.5.

I also think the term "training" is kind of a joke. We really don't do anything. We've been showing them the potty since birth and they see what to do. Then we take away their diaper one day when they are ready and tell them to have at it. Either they can or they can't. There is very little training involved. They physically have to be able to do it, and mentally have to want to.

Children crawl, walk, and talk on their own schedules. Potty time is not different. It's just a milestone.

My grandmother SWORE she had my mom trained at one year old.

I think it's possible but the kid has to be ready. You can't just force them to do it.

Ok this poll is a joke. I don't believe for one second that 12 out of 25 people have potty trained a 12 or 13 month old.

OP, you should look for readiness. Things like pulling at diaper when peeing, ability to pull down pants, 3-4 hours of a dry diaper. Look up the signs online.

My son was completely potty trained (meaning even all night ) by a year and a half. He did it himself though. Was so easy

If she can go into the bathroom pull down her pants and underwear, climb up,on the toilet seat and use it then get down and wipe, pull up,her pants and undies then yes.  I'm a 2 year old teacher and it's usually closer to 3 years old they can actually do it on their own

Wait until she starts ripping off her diaper. That's when she is starting to realize she doesn't enjoy being wet and it will be easier to coax into potty training. My kids were all 2 before even getting interested. I tried on my first at 18mths but he could have cared less. My 3rd is turning 2 this month and is just starting to show some understanding and ripping off her diaper. If you pressure them too early it can cause problems later on.

We started my son shortly after a year old, and by 18 months he was in underwear. We put pull ups on him at night in case of accidents, but he very rarely had any. Some are ready sooner than others, and I've heard boys are easier than girls. We lived in the woods with no neighbors at the time so we encouraged him to pee outside. He got a kick out of it, and made him want to not go in his diaper/underwear.

My SIL did it with my nephew at 14 months. She smacked him when he had accidents and used bribes. Now he's 6 and has severe toileting issues and can not function in regular classes. But by god, he was "trained."

I'm waiting for my 27 month old to be ready. He shows signs of readiness but he just entered a phase where he says he's scared of things, right now and I don't want to push it on him in case he becomes scared of the toilet. They'll go when they're ready.
