What's a midwife??

Question

I have an appointment and I was told I was going to talk to a midwife 
I'm not completely sure if I'll have one but still I need info on them!

If any of you moms have one or already have in the past what happens n what do they do??    Because I'm not sure I want one .__.

Update( I plan on having an epidural And be in the hospital I don't want to do all natrual or home / water birth

A midwife supports you much like an obstetrician would. An OB is medically focused and great if you have a high risk pregnancy. A midwife tends to be more casual and available for questions, and are used in lower risk pregnancies.

Give her a chance! I'm sure you'll love her. Of course, not all midwives are created equal, but most of them are awesome. Are you in the U.S.? In some countries, women only see a doctor if they are high risk. Otherwise, midwives provide the prenatal care.

I'm in the U.S. And opted for a midwife. I haven't seen a doctor at all. With a midwife, care is much more personal. Everything is more natural and attention is focused on you and your wellbeing so that baby can be safe and healthy as well. They allow your body to naturally do its job. They are full of wisdom and birthing techniques that many doctors either don't know, don't care to hear about or just don't want to use. To a midwife, pregnancy is not a medical condition that needs to be treated or intervened if not necessary and that is exactly what I was looking for. This has been my personal experience. I'm sure there are great doctors out there as well.

Midwives are nurses trained in pregnancy, birth and post partum. They usually give you a lot more time and it's more personal than an OB. If you choose a midwife and it winds up being high risk they have OBs on call

I had an ob with my first. With my 2nd we were living in a new area and my neighbor came up to me and said you should let me deliver your baby! Turns out she is a midwife! I really questioned her- when I think midwife I think home or water births. I know I didn't want that. She walked me through the whole difference. She is able to do everything an ob would and could do with all of the same training other than the surgical side of things (meaning they can't perform a c section. An ob would do it) It was a much more personal experience and she really listened to what I wanted. I wanted an epidural but was completely against a c section. My baby ended up having trouble during delivery but she got the problem under control and he came out perfect! 
After that I began working in labor and delivery as a scrub tech. It was amazing the difference in care between the ob and widwifes. Things are much more calm and relaxed with a midwife and you are more likely to not be pushed or rushed into things. You develop more of a relationship. If there is any medical problems there is always an ob available to back up a midwife. So really you get the best of them both!

My midwife is a certified nurse with extra training in pregnancy labor and delivery. She handles low risk women. While I am planning a non medicated delivery at a birth center, many midwives work at hospitals. I love my midwife. She always takes her time with my appointments and questions.

A midwife takes over the care of your OB GYN. They do pretty much the same thing, except if you have any complications, they'll refer you out instead of prescribing you medication directly. I love mine! I text them whenever I have questions, and they're so much more personable than my doctor was.

In Australia, you are generally under the care of both. I love the midwife! They are more personal in their care, and you usually only see the doc if you need meds, there are issues, or right at the end. They are a lot more relaxed about things generally, and have a LOT of training  and medical knowledge.

I've a midwife she just like a doctors helper and your supporter you need one so don't decline trust me and when it's time to have your little one she will be there some midwife are home and some schedule your appointments at your OBGYN for them to see you they know all your information when it's time to give birth not the hospital your going to all they know is paper work of you your midwife knows your personally so it's great to have one I love mines I don't trust no one to deliver my baby but her or my doctor which is her boss
