Are kids punished?

Question

I read an article from one of my classes that did a psychological study on prisoners and how the incarceration of a parent causes the child to be punished because parents do not want their children playing with the kid whos parent is in jail. What do you think about this and would you let your kids or future kids be friends with a kid from this kind of broken family?

It's not the kids' fault their parent/s are in jail/prison. I would never keep my kid/s from playing with another kid, unless it was somehow dangerous. Granted, they probably wouldn't be having sleepovers there, but to punish the child for their parents mistakes is wrong.

For me it would have to be decided by how the child acted toward my child. If the child was well behaved I wouldn't have a problem with them playing with my son. Each person is responsible for their own actions so I would not look down on the child for something the parent did.

How would the other kids or moms know that their friends's dad went to jail? 
I think it's crap. I would rather a drug dealer be in jail than have a child in a home with drugs. That's just my example though.

Hmmm interesting.... I personally feel it would more depend on the current environment that the child is living in. For example is one parent is in jail but the kids are with their mother in a stable environment I don't see why it would matter. Personally, my kids were in this situation. Their father went to jail for 5 years when they were 5-10 years old. We were not together but I was the single mom with 2 kids who's dad was in jail. Many parents knew and I don't think effected friendships in anyways- idk maybe different than what you're referring too but like I said, as long as the children are living in a safe, loving home I don't think it effects the children friendships

I wouldn't care that their parent went to jail, just what they did and how they and the kid acted.

On another note- the kids are punished in a different way...losing out on building a relationship with a parent- sad bc it's not the kids fault yet they are the ones who suffer
