Breastfeeding info
Ok so I see a lot of questions about breastfeeding and I thought as a midwife/doula and mother of three I would help all the prospective mothers a bit.
To the moms worrying about sore/cracked nipples. Get a couple nipple shields for that first month. They help greatly with helping your baby latch and help your nipples toughen up but with out as much soreness. Also buy some lanolin and use it on your nipples before and after feeding. It's completely safe for the baby and you. Your own milk can also help heal your nipples so occasionally let some of the milk dry on your breast it will help promote healing. After the first month you should be all ready to do it with out nipple shields and baby will be a pro at latching on.
There is a pretty common misunderstanding of latching on that most first time mothers or first time breastfeeding mothers have. And that is that only the actually nipple is drawn into the baby's mouth. This isn't true at all. If the baby is properly latched it will seem like they havd a good heft of breast in their mouth. Only trying the latch to the tip of the nipple will cause pain. If properly latched there shouldn't be any pain.
Next, WATER AND REST! these are huge factors in your production. I see plenty of mothers who wonder why they aren't producing enough milk. Milk is a liquid so the more liquid you put in your body the better. And a good nap will give your body that extra boost. So every time little one closes their eyes at least try to lay down and relax a bit.
Foods that are good for promoting milk and foods that aren't.
Avoid sage, peppermint/mint, and parsley. These will actually cause you to not produce as much milk. Also caffeine is not good for you or baby during breastfeeding. So try to limit it as much as possible.
Fenugreek, oatmeal, Brewers yeast, flaxseed, and fennel are amazing at boosting milk supply. And of course WATER! Every time you sit down to breastfeed drink a big glass of water. There are also teas that you can buy to help boost milk supply.
Proper breast care. Don't let your bra pads get very wet and leave them on the breast. This can promote infections and bacterial growth. Try to change out your pads regularly and don't use old dirty pads after they dry either. Make sure to wash they with vinegar to kill any bacteria if you are using cloth pads.
If you are looking for fresh herbal tea that isn't the store bought stuff try motheringherbs.com they make AMAZING teas for pregnancy and breastfeeding. They also make an amazing sits bath for after birth.
I hope this helps some of the ladies on here! Good luck!
