BOY HELP!!!!!

Right so I've just started high school a few weeks ago(I'm 14 tho,Long story) Anyway! There is a boy in my class that I like but I wouldn't want to be more than friends! he is quite smug,cocky and arrogant(I'm stupid for liking him) but my problem is. My best friend had a crush on him for 4 years and she says she doesn't like him now but I don't know if she does or not. Anyways! He is always looking over at us cause we sit next to each other and so I can't tell if he is looking at her or me. Also he doesn't really talk to me it's more my friend but he has known her for longer. Do you think it's because I'm new he doesn't really talk to me? Or does he just prefer my friend? He has nicked me when I wasn't at school one day and my friend told me. Apparently the conversation was like

A girl in my class(Charlotte); you and Louisa(ne) are like sisters

The guy I like(Harvey);that's insulting

My best friend(Serena); to who me or Kara?

And he said to you. And then apparently did a bit of a mockery of me. Did he do that cos he didn't want to let on he liked me or what?!! Please help!
