Deciding on a different contraception

I used to be on the depo provera shot 3 monthy but after being on it for 4 years my doctor said it wasn't good to be on it too long as I was still an adolescent. Now  I am currently on the rod which expires in April and am not sure if to go straight back on that or depo provera again as I have a medical condition these 2 are the only type I was recommended to use , can anyone suggest or give their opinion ?
