Is there such thing as an oral contraceptive that doesn't prevent pregnancy?

Background: My family is very conservative and is not aware that I am sexually active. Today, my mother took me to our family doctor who happens to be her friend as well to discuss my irregular and painful periods. She told me she is going to put me on a low-dose oral contraceptive that does not prevent pregnancy. Does this pill even exist? I have a feeling she just told me that so it wouldn't encourage me to have sex.
