As the others have said, ovulation is the process by which a mature oocyte (an egg or ovum) is released by your ovaries and makes its journey along your Fallopian tubes. It is generally thought to occur about 14 days before your period, but this can vary greatly from woman to woman. The ovum is only viable for about 12-24 hours after it is released, if it meets a sperm in the Fallopian tubes during that time, the process of conception can begin. Since sperm can survive a few days in the uterus, it is generally advised that you try to time sex 1-2 days before ovulation, and the day of ovulation, to best increase your chances of conceiving (becoming pregnant). There are several methods to help you predict/confirm ovulation, such as observing cervical mucous, charting basal body temperature and using ovulation predictor kits.
