I'm getting an IUD in March and I'm REALLY excited. I'm pretty confident I want the Mirena but other opinions can't hurt! I'm in my sophomore year of college and planning on going to law school. And I don't want kids for at least a decade.

I have a Paragaurd and I love it. I got it placed while I was on my period and took 800 mg of ibuprofen an hour before my appointment. It hurt for like thirty seconds and then it was over! I did have some nasty cramps the first few months, but now I'm back to normal. :) I'm so happy it will last ten years with NO hormones. 😍 I am also a sophomore in college!

"I don't want kids for at least a decade" go with Paraguard!! I've had it for a little over three months and it's the best decision I've ever made. Paraguard is good for TWELVE years 🎉 All IUDs hurt going in, and you're at risk for them to migrate or come out if you're young/ have never had kids/ on the smaller side/ etc., but my doctor said the chance of them coming out accidentally is very slim.

I chose Paraguard because:
-I wasn't comfortable with the possibility of having adverse reactions to hormones for years at a time
-I only have to endure the pain of insertion once every twelve years instead of every 2-4
-It was more cost effective to have the procedure done every 12 years instead of every 2-4 years

The paraguard is actually really good. It's the only one that lasts ten years and doesn't have hormones. The only side effects are heavier, longer, and more painful periods but I only found them to be bad the first 3-4 cycles. Now my periods are more or less back to normal with just some mild cramping the first day or two. Before any BC I barely got any cramps and periods lasted 5 days. So if you do have heavy, painful periods it might not be for you. 
The only thing that sucked for me was putting it in. I have a high threshold for pain and that made me not want to have kids lol. But it's because my case was unusual. I have a small uterus and a very very small cervix opening. So it took my gyno three times to insert it and she had to dilate me twice which was the worst part. The actual insertion doesn't hurt. But they're all inserted the same way so I guess that part isn't a big factor for you. My friend had hers put in and didn't have any trouble. She said it was done in like 5 minutes and she never experienced heavier or more painful periods. So it's different for everyone. 
Also you can ask for some medicine to numb the pain but it would have to be taken a few hours before. And it's better to schedule insertion either during your period or ovulation because your cervix is softer then so it'll be less painful!
And it might be good to have someone drive you home. I couldn't even stand after but again don't let that scare you my case was really unusual. Even my gyno said that has never happened. My friend drove an hour home after and was fine lol.

I feeel you. I am a sophomore in college right now and plan on going to medschool after. I just got the Mirena yesterday :) So far so good! But it hurt really really bad getting it in. I almost threw up it hurt so bad
