Washable nappies?

Question

Has anyone out there tried the reusable, washable nappy system with the outside nappy - kind of a waterproof fabric - with cotton pads that you can wash and reuse? Considering it for our first but not sure how practical, healthy and economical they are or what brand to try... Suggestions? Thoughts?

I'm going to do thag with my child when he is born in May. They are expensive upfront but you'll end up saving a ton of money from not buying disposable diapers all the time. Not only do they save you money but they save the environment! And they are easy to clean and come in a lot of fun colors/prints. Plus a lot of them are now adjustable so you don't need to buy a bunch of different sizes as baby grows.

We are using bum genius. We tried a few but the bum genius are the only ones that never leaked. Plus they can go from newborn to training pants for potty training. I have 8 for my one year old that we use. With a newborn you will need more. Not sure quite how many yet though. The pockets are nice. We have had them a month and no stains. I throw them in with Tide free detergent. You dry the inserts in the dryer and the pockets get hung up to dry and dry very quick. I love mine. Disposable liners are not worth the money. We bought some to try and they clog toilets, so if you are cloth diapering to also keep the dirty diaper smell out of the house the disposable liners in the garbage won't accomplish that. Also the poo leaks through the disposables anyways even if it's solid the color still leaks through so it's pointless. My pockets have washed out bright white every time. You don't use fabric softener or bleach on them either. Just detergent. A sprayer is nice but not necessary. I love cloth diapering. No more leaky messes at night or wet smelly sheets from a potty leak. The microfiber is amazingly absorbent and as a helpful hint: at night wrap one microfiber insert in a Gerber cloth diaper($12 for 10 at Walmart) and put a second microfiber on top for extra absorbency if baby tends to leak. We bought a bundle of six for around $100 for 6 diapers and 2 inserts a piece but we found a code online for an extra free diaper with two inserts so I ended up with 7 diapers and 14 inserts in the package. Oh I'd also like to say that ever since the cloth diapering started he has not had a single rash. When he was in disposables all it took was one disposable diaper and he always would get a rash. My babies are sensitive to a lot of things.

You mean covers and inserts? I'm going to do that. I got mine from alvababy and I also got a few fitteds and a few prefolds.
