Stopped birth control and missed period

Ok I started taking birth control in April 2015...decided in January 2016 a couple days after my period stopped I was gonna take myself off the pill and start trying to get pregnant. My period is now officially almost 2 weeks late.....I haven't took a test yet cause my hopes always get crushed :( could my period just be that late because I stopped taking the pill??
