Hit my bf

So my bf of a year and I were arguing and he got in my face to the point where he was spitting on my face as he yelled. I kept telling him to get out of my face and he wouldn't so I smacked him and he just stood there in shock. I went to my room and locked myself in for a while then when I came out he wouldn't talk to me and said I am abusive. Was I wrong for hitting him?
