How do people become "best friends"?

Question

You think is something that people ask to eachother or it is simply assumed?

How does this happen when you are an adult?

I have asked people to be my friend. Usually we laugh as it's slightly awkward but then the ice is broken and the person shares that they are glad I asked them bc it clarifies my intention to be their friend. My BFF and I have known each other since we were 7...Also my newest bff we met last year and I asked her out (as a friend) by making this card of the two of us shopping she loved it and said it was history after that we will be lifeline friends.

My personal experience has shown me that sometimes you just click with a person. A mother of one of my daughter's friends started a convo with me... 3 days later we just kind of looked at each other and went "why the hell did it take so long for us to talk!?! You realize we're besties now, right? :D" As an adult, I think it's harder to meet friends, but when you hit it off you just kind of know and it either easily slides into the conversation or is mutually assumed. Depends on the person:)

I've had my best friends since high school but we've been busy in our lives so don't get to hang out very often (1-2x per year). I've met some girls at work that over a few years, I consider my best friends as well. We know everything about eachother and literally are together mon-fri 8-5
