Midwife or OBGYN??

Question

I have the option of having a midwife or an Obgyn deliver my baby. I'm 6 weeks. Does anyone have a preference and why?

I belong to Kaiser, and was also given the choice. I chose midwife, that allowed me to go as long as I wanted naturally, doing things like being up walking around our using the birthing ball. When I couldn't hang anymore I got the epidural . the midwife delivered my son and she was absolutely WONDERFUL!  I hope she still works at Kaiser, even though it's been over 4 years, I would for sure ask for her again.

I used a midwife with my son and I LOVED it. I will be repeating with this pregnancy. I appreciate the fact the midwives don't treat pregnancy as a disease, but as something that your body was designed to do. They are very minimalistic on their interventions, which I appreciate. I ended up having an emergency c-section, but because I trusted my provider I know that it is absolutely what needed to be done. Not something that was done for her convenience. So whoever you pick make sure that you are on the same page about what birth should look like.

I am also debating. I want a hospital birth for sure I know that. I plan to do it naturally with no drugs but I may change my mind when I think my life is over lol! I like to be left alone when I'm in pain and I fear that a midwife will be too annoying for me. I want it to just be my fiancé and I in the room as much as possible so I don't get annoyed or stressed. For that reason I am leaning toward an OB. My only fear is that I won't have much support after the birth but luckily I'm a nurse so I will have completed my OB clinical rotation by then so maybe I won't need as much support as I think.

I'm debating the same thing. I'm really interested in a water birth assuming my pregnancy goes well. My fear is getting a midwife and having to change to an OB in the middle of my pregnancy.

I'm debating the same thing - I think it depends on what kind of birth you'd like to have (natural vs drugs ) however some ObGYNs are great with both so I'd meet a couple and see how you feel towards them!

Midwife!  I go to a practice that has both Dr and midwives. Used the midwives with my first and will again with this one.

I work in the operating room, so since I know and work with my dr, I chose an OBGYN. Plus the nature of my work shows me every day how things can go wrong and I just feel more comfortable with a Dr. As well as a hospital that has a NICU just in case. I am well aware that I am paranoid though.

I like having an Obgyn. I feel more comfortable and just feel like they have more experience detecting medical problems and addressing them. I think though that as long as you are comfortable with the person that's what matters most!
