Diastasis recti? Aka mummy tummy?!

I delivered 6 weeks ago and was diagnosed with diastasis recti at my 6 week checkup. My doctor said I was fine to start exercising again but to avoid crunches for 6 weeks. She didn't think I needed to be re-evaluated and said that my muscles are only separated by 2cm which is mild.  I have read about this contributing to the dreaded mummy tummy - and am hoping to fix it!!! Unlike some of the amazing pics I've been seeing, I'm 6 weeks out and definitely still have quite the pooch! Anyone else have this diagnosed? What did you do as part of your rehab and how did you know you could resume ab exercises!? Thanks!!!
