When to start using carriers?

I have an Eddie Bauer carrier that says newborn-3 years. (Has a newborn insert). When did you start using a carrier? (Not a wrap)

Once they have some control over their neck muscles-- it's rough when they're too young and have their poor head flopping around, even if the carrier has neck support. Depending on the baby, that strength comes at different times...

My dd was a week old exactly. I waited till her cord fell off cuz I was worried I would rip it. My Dr said it was fine. She liked to shove her head down as far as she could go and sleep that way. She has great head control because of using the carrier. They say it's another form of tummy time.
