Second hand cot mattress?

Question

I've heard that it's not good to use a second hand cot mattress, and I'm wondering what the issue is?
It looks brand new, has always had a mattress protector so no stains etc so I assume no nasty bugs. 
What are your thoughts?

Cot mattresses arnt that expensive... i wouldnt buy a second hand mattress for my self to sleep on so im definitely not going to put my new born on one it may look clean on the outside but you never really know what sort of house or the people your buying it from.

If you trust it then buy it. Stuff is so expensive for baby that it doesn't hurt to cut corners where you can. If my crib and mattress weren't a gift I would probably be buying used. I got my daughters swing used and will be getting clothes and such even as she gets older. Follow your gut. Everything for your baby isn't going to be perfect and brand new and baby isn't even going to notice just you are. Use the money you save to get other things for baby.

I got one from a neighbours friend. It had a little hole in the bottom of the mattress. But other than that it worked well. Now for this baby he will be using a new one that I bought for my first born about a year ago. Saving money wherever I can.
