Car seat expiration?

I don't get why a car seat expires now? I used my carrier with my daughter just a few months. It is still in perfect condition. Why on earth are they dated now? To me condition should matter. It works the same as it did 5 years ago. This is more of a vent because I can't sell it now for this printed date that means nothing as to its safety.
