Harry Potter (movies) racial debate: Lavender Brown
How about a non-troll post, eh? Although it may be completely random and still dumb. It's all I got off hand.
Real debate I once over heard:
In the HP movies Lavender Brown was a played by a black actress while she was a minor character. Then when the character gained attention as Rons love interest the character is suddenly played by a white actress.
Some people say this is racist towards African Americans for obvious reasons. What was wrong with her being black?.. Not that Hollywood is known for being PC when it comes to racial anything, but you get the point.
On the other hand some say it was actually racist towards whites too, because the switch was made because it was more believable for a character who takes a turn for the crazy to be played by a white woman. -in other words, white women tend to be more hopelessly boy obsessed and/or stalkers.
Then there's the idea that the black actress was replaced to save the black community from being portrayed as this level of crazy because POC would look more poorly on that portrayal, than just switching the actresses.
What do you think? Racism? Was it a good move to protect POC in a weird way? Or just a horrible move period.
