Thoughts on the current US gun laws?

Okay so I'm from Australia and every time there is a mass shooting in America, everyone in our country doesn't understand why the gun laws in the US haven't changed yet. In 1996 after the Port Arthur massacre which killed 36 people, our Priminister implemented very tough gun laws instantly and we've never had a mass shooting since. I saw a post in here just before that said that guns should stay being legal and everyone who commented agreed, so I'm just confused as to why people want to keep guns legal after so many lives have been lost? Let me know your opinion!

They seem to think they need the guns to protect them from the guns. Its a never ending cycle of retardedness

I think we need stricter laws, but, if you follow the law, and go through all the steps to get a gun, you should be able to have that gun. I'm from Detroit, Michigan. I've been raped 4 times, almost gang raped, robbed, and a lot of other things I don't wanna get into. I'm taking classes to get my concealed to carry permit. Even if we have stricter laws, criminals will still have guns, be able to get guns if they need them, and use them to hurt innocent people.

Stricter gun laws will not keep illegal weapons off the streets. Responsible gun owners, like myself are just that RESPONSIBLE. We have permits, our guns are registered the government knows exactly what I keep in my home. I have cases and locked safes. Nothing out in the open. I take them to a legal range to fire and clean them. My  husband and I also hunt when we travel (can only use a bow and arrow here) I live in New York where gun violence is high. I would love to live in a state where I would be allowed concealed carry for my OWN safety.  I know that probably won't happen here because we are an overpopulated state and regulations would probably be too much for law enforcement to get a handle on. Long story short- Leave the responsible gun owners alone and work on making background checks stricter instead. People who have committed crimes (even petty crimes or moving violations) should not be granted that privilege. Same if you have history of mental illness. It's a privilege not a right. America needs to stop punishing those that do the RIGHT thing and are upstanding citizens that respect the laws. I will not have my privileges taken away by people that know nothing about the subject.

Idk why everyone here is so obsessed with guns. I mean most of the people committing these crimes , DONT have guns legally. so it would be kind of pointless if they did do anything drastic.  I definitely think there should be stricter laws though.

First off, America and Australia are very different places. 
Also, I think it's better we keep our guns. Without our guns, how would we be able to protect ourselves and our family? 
Try to have a violent intruder come into your house with a gun, and you don't have one. Who would win? Hmm...

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Gun laws won't stop mass murders. If someone really wants to kill a bunch of people they would find some other way if they couldn't use guns.

They think they need them for protection. So if they are a responsible gun owners, the guns will be kept in a safe at all times. Riddle me this. If the gun is in the safe, and an intruder barges in your house, what do you do? Say "hold on one sec, let me get a gun out of my safe"? I don't think so. They want guns for the sake of guns. They have no control over them whatsoever, even though they claim to.

If they're for safety they're wouldn't be kept in a safe. If they're not kept in a safe, they make those inside the home far less safe, especially if kids can access them.
