Mother angry about my baby's name?

Ok so I am american and my boyfriend is Arabic. I like unique names and have always wanted to give my son something that not a lot of people have.  We are having a boy and decided on the name Jalil. I love this name and so do all of my friends. However my mom told me yesterday I need to give him more of aa American name because he's going to get made fun of in school and teased. Really!?? I live in Louisiana there are a lot of Arabic people here!!!  With ARABIC names!! She's like you need to give him a name he's not going to want to change and be embarrassed of. Excuse me but he is half Arabic I don't think he's going to be ashamed where he came from . Not to mention I have Arabic friends here who's sons names are way Arabic and hard to pronounce. Do you think Barack Obama hates his name? That seems like a unique name to me. Ugh. Am I just over reacting ???!

Maybe your mom want a name that embraces the cultures of both sides of the family. That's understandable. It's your choice though.

Profiling is huge here. So I see your moms concern, I think she's just trying to look out for the baby. With that being. Said its your baby, your life, and your choice totally and completely. You and the dad need to like the name. No one else.

Name the baby what you and your husband like.... There's always going to be people who disagree, (moms included) people are so insensitive when it comes to this. I hate it! I wanna name my daughter Zeilani my husband likes Phoenix. I have people saying oh nooo not Phoenix and Yuckkk Zeilani is horrible. That is so mean.... (They can go to hell)

Im sorry but id have to agree with your mom on this one...My sisters hubby's name is Pierre and she loves the name Nasir. His name is Pierre Nasir. We call him Nas. My kids have Irish and English names. My sons are black and Moms of color will tell you that 10 minutes before our sons open their mouths they are being judged. Whether they are black, hispanic or foreign. Shes not saying she doesnt like the name she's saying she doesn't want her grandson judged. People are cruel. So are kids. Here we are excepting and not so excepting. I follow the rule of no unique names. I dont use the ones that are in trend but I can tell being an upper middle-class black mother. My children come first I need a name that will get them through life not just what i like. Again im not muslim or follow strict religious beliefs. But I do know my Ryan,Robert and Reid are going to college and are going to go on interviews. To answer your Barack Obama name question he did hate his name. Like i said people are cruel. But anywho at the end of the day you will do what you want to do its your baby. GL

I totally disagree with your mom the name that you chose is unique and I really liked it and don't worry about the school thing because there are people with worst names and it's okay and him not liking his name depends on how you will raise him .

I disagree with your mom completely. The name you chose is def not "too Arabic" and I def don't believe anyone could even try to make fun of that name if they tried (doesn't have odd spelling or pronunciation). Your mom may just be feeling some sort of ownership or need to be "included." My mom did the same. She tried to say kids would make fun of my son's name...I shut that shit up real quick. This is your decision..and any name you give your kid is ultimately up to you. My mom now loves the name I picked btw.
