Do you think homeschooling shelters kids too much?

I've had this discussion with some girlfriends recently, and there was mixed views so I'm curious as to how glow feels. The general consensus I've gotten is that people feel as though homeschooled kids are being sheltered, and lack social development because of it.
I don't necessarily agree, but I do think there's pros and cons to both. Depending on your public school system, the schools could be horrible, but the life experience your child gains out in the real world is also something they need to learn, and you may be hindering them by homeschooling
