Pregnancy test

My hubby works out of town 2 wks at a time and then home for a wk...I haven't been on birth control since January of this year but we still haven't conceived...the way he works makes it hard trying to conceive.. he was home the wk before last and it matched up to my ovulation and now my cycle is 3 days late but they have been irregular before...is it too early to take a test??
