Is being poor expensive? If it is, is it more expensive than being stable or even somewhat wealthy?

Lol. You can tell who's been poor before and who hasnt. Being poor is very expensive. You have to constantly pay for the things you don't have. You pay for food everyday. Pay for public transit. Pay for laundry etc. You're paying so much that you can't really save

There is a saying that you have to have money to save money and it is absolutely true. When you're poor you're paying more in the long run for most basics that people who are either comfortable or have money take for granted. Most of the time you pay on your bills when you have some money, so then at least part of your bill is late, which causes late fees to be applied. If you're shopping at the dollar stores then there are many things you're actually paying more for than if you had the means to make a single trip to a regular grocery store. People who have never been poor just don't understand and will feel this is a stupid question.

Yes, being poor costs more in the long run. Less total money may be being spent especially on extras, but paying for the basics costs more.

Example: If I have enough money in the bank I'm going to shop for necessary supplies like toilet paper, shampoo, tampons ect. as they go on sale. I might buy in bulk, or even join a discount warehouse.

If instead I have no or minimal money in the bank I'm going to buy whatever I need in the moment in the cheapest possible amount. Although it's costing me less right now it's a more expensive way of doing things long term.

Being poor is very expensive. I grew up in poverty. Laundry is very expensive when you don't have a washer and dryer or yours breaks. My mom used to spend 40-50 dollars a week washing and drying our clothes in the summer it would be less cause we could hang them out to dry. but she couldn't save up cause she lived pay check to pay check. That's around 2080 to 2600 a year every year. You could get a washer and dryer for less. One minute you can be doing good but if someone gets, sick, or car breaks down or the bus stops running on time you're back to square one. It's sad. Living paycheck to paycheck is very costly.

Yeah I guess so. Making payments on everything with interest, you end up paying double than what someone who is rich would pay. Every time you think you're gonna be okay another expense comes up that completely ruins any sense of cushion. Etc. it's rough being anything less than rich. Middle class gets the shit end as well.

Being poor is extremely expensive and I was just thinking about this today. Like why? My SO got pulled over because of an expired plate because we couldn't afford it at all, then we couldn't afford the ticket in time so he has a warrant and now I won't allow him to drive to work because if he goes to jail our family would be f*^%ed. I'm 8 months pregnant and we still can't afford to pay to get his license back. It's like us poor people get punished for being poor. We had EVERYTHING perfect and planned and we're doing fine before all of this. I have hyperemesis Gravidarim and severe depression during this pregnancy so since we were doing so well he said go ahead and quit my PT job (was hazardous to baby anyway) because we will be fine, so I did. He ended up losing his job and we got evicted, now the apartment we lived in sent ME a $3k bill and said they would garnish my wages if I got a job which is what I planned to do but we can't afford the $3k. Don't know what will happen once our daughter gets here. I'm not going to want to be driving him around to work have just given birth. It's just so fucked.

Being poor is expensive. If you never have had to worry about whether or not your check came and if it's going to be enough to pay the bills then you might not understand what's being said here. It's a very different reality when you are poor and trying to pay your bills and not depending on assistance and even when you are just over the threshold for assistance it's hard. Insurance is expensive so you go to the emergency room because you can't afford to see a doctor.

I'm very great full me and my dh both were raised by single mums. We have the same take on a family unit. We're in it for the long haul and will always work through things. We both only got things for our birthdays and Christmas and then it was usually something we needed and not something we really really wanted unless our mums could afford to get it. My dh has 4 other siblings, I only had 1 when my mum was a single mum and now me and my brother are adults and my sister is almost 8, so she doesn't really know what it's like to want what you can't have. Which is why I'm greatful for my husbands strong work ethic and his perseverance to do more and more for us and if there's ever anything I need for the kids he'll gladly give me whatever I need and if I want something that's not a necessity then I try to save for it or I ask him if we have extra that he can help me with. I'm glad we have the same background cuz we have the same desire to never let our kids know that feeling of not wanting to ask because they know we don't have it but we can make it work.
