What's better for pets, to be put down or natural death?

If you have a pet that is living miserably in their old age. Like having Extreme arthritis, deaf, blind all at once for example. Or maybe it got cancer and is in pain/highly uncomfortable. Is it better to put down this pet or allow it to live the rest of its natural life span no matter how painful/uncomfortable?
