Do not be alarmed if you have slight cramping or bleeding afterwards, that is normal. The collected cells are then shipped to the practice's lab and you should hear from your physician's office with results in a few days.

Pap smears usually start around sexually active females a little earlier but typically around age 21 and every 3-5 years consecutively unless otherwise told. If you have a family history of cancers , especially cervical, please tell your physician so they can determine whether or not they want to screen you more frequently.

have to move the speculum around in order to find your cervix. Once they have your cervix in view, the physician I work with uses the big Q tip to wipe excess secretions/fluids and then they start with the spiral brush, they poke just into the opening of the cervix and hand it to whomever is assisting to swish those cells around in the "Thin prep" solution, then, they use the "spatula" and lightly scrape at the cervix, again, handing it off to whomever is assisting to swish around in the solution-collecting the cells. Once done, they slowly retract the speculum from your vagina, which again can be a little uneasy and cause slight pressure but at this point you're almost finished. Some physicians like to do a manual check afterwards, so they'll squirt some lube on their first two fingers and slide them into your vagina to feel around and make sure they don't feel any bumps or lumps, foreign objects, etc. once finished with that, your Pap smear is complete!

The physician I work with has a speculum light, vaginal speculum, spiral brush, a tiny thin "spatula", big surgical Q-Tips and of course, the "Thin prep" preservative solution that the cells will be placed into and then shipped off to the lab.

During a typical gyn exam, your doctor will possibly do a breast exam; palpating the breast tissue, making sure you have no lumps or bumps that can bring up concern, next ( at least the physicians I work for) work their way down to the abdominal area where again they'll palpate and work their way down to the pelvic area where they purposely apply pressure to make sure it isn't painful to you. After the initial two steps, they move on to the actual Pap smear itself. You will be positioned on your back , they will take out two stirrups located under the hospital bed and place your feet on them, use these to hoist yourself up as you move your whole body downwards on the bed, until your bottom is about to fall off the edge.

At mine they swab your uterus with a q tip after they open your hoo ha with the tong things. Then they just feel around with their fingers to see if there's anything abnormal.

For me they had a nurse and my Dr. I had to strip down and put covers over my breasts and over my lower part. Then my Dr and nurse came back in the room. I had to scoot and open my legs wide and put my feet in the stirrups then she put a big light down there. Then she heated up the speculum and put gel on it then she cranked me open so she could get a better view of my cervix then took a swab of my cervix. It was uncomfortable and a bit of pressure. Afterwards she gave me a pad to put on in case I bleed a little. And put my clothes on and off on my Merry way.
