Since this seems to be a really popular topic in this group, but it tends to just turn into people pushing MLMs, here's a quick primer on what kind of jobs there are that can be done from home and how you can get them.

Types of jobs:

- Freelance Professional: There are many areas where companies or individuals usually hire outsiders to take over a responsibility. These roles require degrees, certificates, professional accreditation, and/or past experience. Example: Accountants, book keepers, designers (webdesigners), notaries, medical coders. If you don't already have the right credentials, there are usually programs to be found at your local community college to get them.

- Telecommuting Jobs: remote IT support, data analysis, data entry, programming, remote personal assistants (managing calendars, email inboxes, ordering stuff online), call centers (including the seedier stuff, but plenty of less seedy companies do this too), content moderation (like the admins here at glow), customer support. You can find jobs like this through Craigslist (or for tech, Angel List ), specialty sites like We Work Remotely, and many others. There is a good list in this article by Forbes.

- Remote Contract Work: These are jobs performed by contract, and can be anything. Data Entry, Copywriting, voice acting, design work, pretty much anything. A good way to find these jobs is via freelancer websites like Fiverr, Upwork, Guru, and many many, many others. (Check out the link to the Forbes article above).

- Run your own business: In home child care, an etsy store, sometimes even things like catering, wedding invitation calligraphy, home seamstress work, cake decoration, and many others. (There's someone in my town who custom makes cushions for outdoor furniture). A guide on how to do these things would be hard for me to write, since the requirements and work involved vary a lot depending on what you want to do, where you live, and a lot of other factors. However, if you ask around and do your research, answers can be found. The first question should be "what skills do I have?" Note: I do not include MLM in this category.

Something to keep in mind: If you're doing contract work, your taxes will be different than if you're an employee. In some places, such as in the United States, you may need to make quarterly tax payments. It depends a lot on your situation (exact employment category) and how much money you make. A good rule of thumb is to look at whatever the contract rate is and subtract 30% - that's your actual wage.

About MLMs: MLMs are what used to be called pyramid schemes. In other words, the only way to make money in them is through getting other people involved. This means a few people make lots of money, and most people lose money. They get around the laws against pyramid schemes through a few loopholes, one of which is that they involve a product, but they functionally work the same way. MLMs generally involve selling products for a company, but you are on the hook for them, and the person who recruited you makes money off your sales. As the Medium article says, "According to a report that studied the business models of 350 MLMs, published on the Federal Trade Commission’s website, 99% of people who join multilevel-marketing companies lose money. Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a brilliant business model or a predatory practice — or a little bit of both.” (FTC)"

Even if you're one of the lucky few who don't end up losing money on the deal, the skills you're using would make you more money in a straight up sales job. If you've got the skills to hustle like that, I'd look for actual sales jobs instead, they can be very lucrative.
