Apartment fire (advice and if u are a lawyer or know laws even better)
Feb 7th the apartment i lived in caught on fire while everyone was in it and two people died. And 50yo woman and a 5yo boy. I was named as the "hero" for alerting everyone of what was going on because it was 2am and everyone was asleep. (Im not bragging or anything but just mentioning everything incase that would help answer my question).. I have 2 boys. One is almost 2yo and the other is almost three months. He was one month at the time. No one has nowhere to sleep that night of the incident. Since no one in that building had insurance, we had nothing. The apartment didnt give us money, but they gave us an apartment to stay in the next day. Which it was getting late and the manager had not contacted me to give me the key so i had to ask and look for her and since the police were there they were able to contact her which when she called me she had the worst attitude ever, as if someone woke her ass up. Aside from that, the apartment had a lot of cockroaches, you cant even go to the kitchen without turning on the light at night or else you might step on a few. We told her and they havent came to fumigate yet and i also told her there were spiders, because my 2yo had a lot of bug bites and were really big and hard. The bathroom roof on top of the bathrub was inflated which was falling off two weeks after. The closet in the living had no door. We have to pay the same amount as the other apartment except this one is super small, you literally feel like you're in a hole. And they can't bullshit me and tell me its the same size because its not, the other apartment had a closet in the bathroom and this one does not. The other apartment had a wayyy bigger living room and this one does not, the kitchen and the "biggest room" are extremely small. I have a queen bed and i cant even put a dresser because there is no room AND i dont even have a crib so its not like thats taking up any room, i have a small bassinet. AND we have a storage room that is in the basement (our apartment is now inthe basement; old apartment was second floor) and someone is using it and we told the manager and she said she was going to do something about it which she hasnt. People donated things and the red cross helped us with some money. This months rent wasnt even free, we paid half but still it would have been the LEAST they could have done. The 2nd of march, there was an examination at the burnt apartment for the tenants to look for what was left if there was anything left and some tenants were argueing with the owners so they cancelled it and said they would notify us when they would do it again. (I was in the hospital at this time for surgery i got my galbladder removed, my mom went in place of me). I went to the office when i got out the hospital and asked when was the next examination and she said they would call us to go individually. Days passed and i called the office this time asking again what happened and she said the same thing that they were going to call us. TODAY MARCH 26, i recieved a letter from the apartments insurance saying that the examination was over and was done on march 7th when we had no idea of it. I had a safe and a lot of gold jewelry and other things of sentimental value that i wanted/WANT to look for. The safe is pretty sturdy and did survive that fire even the detective told us. When they were calling us in to talk to us, they called my mom later to show her pictures of where the fire SUPPOSEDLY started which was in the basement(on top of our apartment). They said the fire started in the trashcan in the laundry room/basement in an aluminum trashcan but they ONLY SHOWED MY MOM the pictures (she only speaks spanish) because she was the last one down there washing but she said that in the pictures they showed her, there was trash IN the trashcan and the washer and dryer (which were right besidethe trashcan) were perfectly fine and the number "1.50" was still even on. Keep in mind the basement storages are made of wood. She said the walls were a little dark kind of burned but nothing big. That it looked fine. MY question is, WHY did they just SHOW HER the pictures and why was the basement still in better condition that the rest of the building! When supposedly the fire had started THERE and why would there still be trash in the trashcan if thats where it started? How did the whole building burn down and get completely destroyed and where it supposedly started is okay? It does NOT make any sense. And the morning of the fire when one of the owners was there, he did not say a word to any of the victims. Not even a apology because in the end they are his apartments so he is held responsible basically. Or at least to just be polite. This whole case sounds and looks pretty fishy to me. So my question is.. Do i have any rights? What ARE my rights and what should i do? Who should i go to? Thank you millions in advance, i'd really appreciate any thoughts and advice.
