I think the punishment should depend what they did and aswell as their age. I will never hit my children tho, me and my siblings where never spanked and we have total respect for our mother and rarely misbehaved as kids

Not a mom yet but I think it would depend on the situation. If it's something small where they might have not known better = talk. If I have to repeat myself and they're being disrespectful and or hurting someone = spank or I'm sure I can sound pretty scary when I'm mad so I might not have to resort to spanking lol

This one's hard. I would do all of the above depending on what my child did to upset me. If it was his first time doing it and he didnt know any better talking to him would be my choice. If he's being a brat and isn't willing to listen or doesnt care i tend to take my sons internet connection away (he's 5) or just take his whole ipad away and that seems to work. If he's just being unbearable and crying and talking back to me then i'd probably do some light spanking to let him know i'm not playing. If he's got me to the point where i just wana throw him out a window i just laugh at the fact that such a little person could have such power over my emotions and preoccupy myself with chores. With any of the choices though i never forget that i love him and that he is only a child. 💕

Wow... I'm surprised by how many people said spanking... I dont think this solves anything.

Talking and taking away privaleges but sticking to your punishment every time. One slip, like you give ice cream when they still did something they shouldn't and they will feel like they can get away with it

Depends on the situation and the age of the child. Although I would never spank a child.
I work in childcare and we are told that time out/away is not an effective punishment for young children as they are not learning anything from it. Most of the time they are told to think about why they are there when in reality a young child can't do that they will be thinking about what they want to play with next etc. Also the same with making a young child say sorry. They don't know empathy at a young age and mostly say sorry because that is what is expected from them and an automatic response. I read a very good article on this but can't find it online, I was going to link it.
Talking to a child and explaining what they did wrong and telling them how it made you feel (which is teaching them emotion/empathy) is mostly effective for 2 1/2 -4/5. 
I have found in my experience working with children, that taking them away from a situation and giving them a 2 minute calm down with you will often change behaviour as it gives them time to chill out and get there feeling/emotions calmed. Just sitting looking at a book for two minutes together will often change behaviour. In a way I suppose this could be considered a time out.
This is all just my personal opinion and what I have learned working with children.
At the end of the day every child and every parent is different and you will do whatever you feel as a parent is most effective for your child. No child is the same and punishments work in different ways for every child.
